Early Intervention β’ Learning β’ Development
Supporting Learning From the Start
Children develop at their own pace, but sometimes they need additional support along the way.
Early intervention helps identify developmental and learning needs so children can receive support as early as possible.
You don’t have to wait for your child to fall behind to ask questions or explore available services.
π« How Schools Can Help
For children ages 3 and older, public school districts can evaluate developmental and educational needs, even before kindergarten.
Support may include:
- Preschool Special Education: Early learning opportunities tailored to eligible children’s needs.
- Speech & Language: Building communication and language skills.
- Occupational Therapy: Supporting participation in classroom activities and everyday tasks.
- Individualized Instruction: Helping children develop foundational learning and developmental skills.
Services depend on each child’s evaluation and educational needs.
π Finding Your Path
- Birth to Age 3: Contact California Early Start through your Regional Center or local education agency.
- Ages 3β5: Contact your school district β Request a preschool special education evaluation β Review eligibility and services.
- School-Age Children: Share concerns β Request an evaluation β Explore appropriate educational support.
- Already Receiving Services: Review progress β Discuss changing needs β Adjust support when appropriate.
π± Why Early Support Matters
Early intervention creates opportunities to strengthen communication, social connections, independence, and readiness for learning.
Families and educators each bring valuable perspectives. Working together helps children receive support that reflects their individual needs.
